What is BMI?
Body mass index (BMI) is a quick screening measure that relates your weight to your height. It's widely used because it's simple to calculate and correlates reasonably well with body fat at a population level — but it's a screening tool, not a diagnosis, and it doesn't directly measure body fat or account for muscle mass, frame size, or where fat is distributed.
The formula
Both formulas give the same result — this calculator converts imperial units internally so you always get a standard BMI figure.
The standard categories
- Below 18.5 — underweight
- 18.5–24.9 — normal weight
- 25–29.9 — overweight
- 30 and above — obese

Frequently asked questions
Not reliably. Muscle is denser than fat, so muscular people can land in the "overweight" range with a healthy or low body fat percentage. BMI is more useful as a population-level screening tool than an individual verdict.
No — children and teens are assessed using age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles, not the fixed adult categories used here. This calculator is intended for adults.
Treat it as one data point, not a full picture of your health. A doctor can weigh it alongside waist circumference, activity level, and other health markers to give you real context.
