What a good invoice includes
A clear invoice speeds up payment: it should unambiguously state who's billing whom, what for, how much, and by when. At minimum that means your business details, the client's details, a unique invoice number for your records, the invoice and due dates, an itemized breakdown of work or goods, and the total amount owed including any tax.
A few tips
- Use a consistent, sequential invoice numbering scheme — it makes bookkeeping and follow-up far easier.
- State your payment terms explicitly (e.g. "due within 14 days") rather than assuming they're understood.
- Keep line items specific — "Website redesign, 12 hours" reads better than a vague lump sum.
