How GPA is calculated

GPA is a credit-weighted average of your grade points. Each course's letter grade converts to grade points on a 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, and so on), multiplied by that course's credit hours to get "quality points." Add up quality points across every course, divide by total credit hours, and that's your GPA — so a 4-credit class pulls more weight than a 1-credit class.

Weighted vs. unweighted

Unweighted GPA treats every course the same regardless of difficulty, capped at 4.0. Weighted GPA adds bonus points — commonly 0.5 for honors courses and 1.0 for AP or IB courses — to reflect that they're harder, which is why weighted GPAs can exceed 4.0. Toggle between the two above using the same course list.

Frequently asked questions

Unweighted GPA uses a standard 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty. Weighted GPA adds extra points (often 0.5 or 1.0) for honors, AP, or IB courses, so it can exceed 4.0.

GPA is a weighted average: each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours, those are summed, then divided by total credit hours — so a 4-credit class affects your GPA more than a 1-credit class.
